Fossils: Hematitized Ammonite

Ammonites They were a group of marine mollusks that existed from the Devonian period (~400 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous period, (~66 million years ago) when, a mass extinction event occurred, wiping out the majority of the Earth’s species, including the ammonites. 

These ancient creatures were incredibly successful and abundant in the seas during their time. They were excellent swimmers and active predators.

Their shells were chambered, with the animal living in the largest chamber, while the other chambers were filled with gas to help with buoyancy. 

Today, ammonites are considered iconic and popular fossil finds. They have left their marks in the Earth’s history, showcasing the incredible diversity and beauty of ancient marine life.
