It was highly sought after by artists for its vibrant blue color, and was ground down to create the pigment ultramarine, which became a highly prized color in painting. It was a favorite color of Renaissance painters. It was believed that the most expensive color should be used when portraying the mother of Jesus Christ, so the previously red dress became blue in the depictions of Virgin Mary during the 14th century.

Sodalite was first discovered in Greenland in 1806 by a Danish scientist named Peder Christian Abildgaard. He named the mineral “sodalite” due to its high sodium content.
