Agate’s name is derived from the Greek word “agates,” which means “happy” or “fortunate.” Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, highly valued agate for its beauty and believed it had protective properties. In ancient Rome, agate was particularly popular for making seals and signet rings, jewelry, amulets, and talismans.
During the Middle Ages, agate was used extensively in religious art.
It is also used in making cameos, intaglios, and other engraved gemstones.
Carneol, The history of carneol can be traced back to ancient civilizations. It was believed to have protective qualities and was often buried with the dead to ensure a safe journey to the afterlife.
Carnelian was also highly valued in Mesopotamia. The 4,500-year-old Tello ring, a beautiful carnelian, comes from this region. On the island of Cyprus, women wore necklaces made of carnelian beads as early as 5,000 years ago. In the Roman Empire, carnelian was a commonly used material for cutting cameos and making signet rings.
Carnelian appears dark red, like blood, both of which owe their color to the same element: iron. For the ancient Egyptians, it was probably the “stone of life” due to its blood-like color, played an important role in funeral rituals, and was also used as a talisman. It is also mentioned in the Egyptian “Book of the Dead”, a collection of spells. Tutankhamun’s breast ornament is a sun disk also made of deep red carnelian.
